[edit] Introduction
What is a Transition Town (or village / city / forest / island)? It all starts off when a small collection of motivated individuals within a community come together with a shared concern: how can our community respond to the challenges, and opportunities, of peak oil and climate change?
[edit] Chester as a Transition Town
Welcome to Transition Chester
Chester achieved full transition initiative status on 21 August 2008 and, having worked through the primer, written a constitution and formed a strong working group, we can now focus on getting some of the more hands-on work done.
[edit] Local events
We have been busy building up awareness of Transition Chester via film showings about peak oil, stalls at local events, leafleting and providing speakers for other groups. On the surface, this awareness-raising process is about informing people about the issues but also more importantly, it’s about getting people to talk to each other and building up strong social networks. Check out our Forthcoming Events page for awareness-raising, practical and social activities.
[edit] Get involved
We are always looking for ways to reach more people. If you are part of a local group and would like to host a film showing, or a talk to learn more about peak oil and the Transition Towns initiative, just drop us an email, or give us a call.
[edit] Working groups
Transition Chester already has three working groups in place, with Trees for Chester, the Heart and Soul Group and the Building a Library Group. Ideas for new groups include community renewables, community gardening and co-housing. If you're interested in any of these ideas, or are interested in starting a different group, please get in touch! Likewise, if you have an idea for how to improve these pages, or better still have the IT skills and spare time to help jazz them up, we'd love to hear from you.
