[edit] Media in Chester
Chester's first newspaper was the Chester Weekly Journal, begun by the printer William Cooke in 1721. It continued until 1733 and was superseded by Cooke's later ventures, the Industrious Bee or Weekly Entertainer (1733–4) and the Chester Weekly Tatler (1734). The Whig Chester Chronicle was begun by the printer John Poole in 1775 and at first struggled to survive, changing its day of publication several times before settling on Friday in 1776. A detailed history of newspapers in Chester can be found at British History Online. Chester has several local newspapers and a commercial radio station. There are also several local magazines.
On TV, Chester is in the BBC NorthWest region and in ITV’s Granada region. There are no BBC radio stations for Chester, but you can easily tune in to BBC Radio Liverpool or BBC Radio Manchester.
Nationally, Chester is poorly served by the media. The now sadly defunct North West Enquirer was one of the few papers to actively cover Cheshire. The BBC News Online website splits coverage between its local sites for Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Staffordshire, making finding local news online quite difficult. There is a campaign afoot to force the BBC to improve its local, online coverage.
For useful local websites, check out the listings in Living in Chester or have a look at the listings found at "merseyblogs".
