Second-hand and Junk shops

From Chester Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Chester's mix of the rich and the poor has led to a thriving community of second-hand and junk shops. Whether it's the once-worn cast-off of a footballer's wife, the house clearance of an eclectic collector or something sold to tide the owner over to the next dole cheque, it may find itself in one of the many second-hand outlets in Chester. A selection of them are listed below - go rummage.

Contents

[edit] Brook Street

Off-beat Brook Street always seems to have a shop opening up or closing down. Many of these are second-hand shops and several buy as well as sell.

[edit] Scope

Great for women's clothes and accessories. Not so good for books, but sometimes they have a shelf of books for £1 each.

[edit] Fagins

Electrical goods, power tools and videos - haggling over prices is acceptable here.

[edit] The Trading Post

Mostly electrical goods, mobile phones, odd computer bits, etc.

[edit] Classic Costume Hire

Fancy dress hire that will occasionally sell.

[edit] Boughton

There is a cluster of antique and second-hand shops near the plague cemetery at Boughton (that's the hill behind the drinking fountain). While in the area it's also worth visiting McLarens for reproduction antiques and a look at the exquisite stained-glass windows in their townhouse cum ex shoe-works of a showroom.

[edit] Simon

An amazing range of tat (no clothing) but good for the odd miner's lamp, vaulting horse, fencing mask or (a speciality) agricultural tool. A good place for a real bargain if you are looking for something peculiar.

[edit] Borg

Mostly furniture and vases.

[edit] Frodsham Street (including Tesco's forecourt)

Second-hand shops in Frodsham street come and go. Here are some of the stayers..

[edit] Oxfam

Good for second-hand books -probably the best non-antiquarian old bookshop in Chester

[edit] Barnardo's

Good for men's and women's clothing (with the occasional designer find). Moderate choice of books and vinyl.

[edit] The Rows/Town Centre

[edit] Oxfam

Less good than it used to be. Three years ago, it was a goldmine for designer clothing, but it sells very few clothes now, preferring to concentrate on Fairtrade products. Good book section though.

[edit] The Walls at Northgate Street

Two antiquarian bookshops Gildas and Bluecoat Books can be found on the Walls by the Northgate.

[edit] Faulkner Street Area

[edit] Hospice of the Good Shepherd

Great for costume jewellery and bric-a-brac. The branch round the corner in Charles Street is even better and sells an enormous selection of books and videos, plus furniture.
