Hoole has a huge number of off-licences in and around Faulkner Street, but only Scatchard's is independent. A proper vintner's, owner Sam Jackson sells a massive range of quality wines to suit various budgets. Definitely the place to go if you're seeking something better than a £2.99 bottle of supermarket plonk. She also has a good range of malt whiskies and other spirits, and beers. There are regular wine-tasting events throughout the year, and the occasional whisky tasting too. Look out for the Scatchards newsletter in which Sam dispenses her awesome knowledge of wine and advises on matching wines with foods.
