[edit] Rufus Court
This charming little cul-de-sac is tucked away at the top of Northgate Street - it's well hidden and f not for the sandwich board and sign outside, you could easily walk past it. Inside, Rufus Court plays host to bars, restaurants and chi-chi boutiques. There is a second access via a narrow set of steps from the top of the Walls.
[edit] History
The current incarnation of Rufus Court was built by Thompson Cox Developments in the early 1990s. By the late 1960s, much of this area had become run down and the Insall Report of 1968 recommended that new shops and maisonettes facing onto Northgate Street should be built, along with larger town houses behind. The landowners, the Dean and Chapter of Chester Cathedral, drew up plans to erect a five-storey office block right next to the Northgate, which was intended to fund both the housing scheme and the restoration of adjacent listed buildings.
In preparation for the redevelopment, an extensive archaeological dig was conducted. This led to the discovery of substantial portions of the Roman rampart and associated structures. Consequently, the entire area was scheduled as an Ancient Monument and restrictions were placed on all new buildings.
In 1978, following the appointment of a new Dean at the Cathedral, a gradual programme of repairs was started, assisted by grants. The new protected status of the area meant the plans for the office block were abandoned.
Around this time, Chester City Council expressed interest in putting the excavated Roman buildings on permanent public display. Due to lack of money, this never happened – the remains were carefully reburied.
[edit] Bars
The biggest and best attraction for drinkers is undoubtedly Alexander's Jazz Bar. It's not just a bar, it's a music and comedy venue. Quiet by day (and ideal for a pub lunch or a coffee away from the crowds) and lively by night, Alexander's is must-do. Bollicini across the court is a good venue for cocktails.
[edit] Eating
Bollicini is a swish, upmarket Italian restaurant, currently considered one of Chester's top dining experiences. The Mediterranean Restaurant across the court failed to attract good reviews and has now closed. We await its replacement with interest and the site offers outside seating. The access to the Walls is via the steps next to this restaurant.
