Northgate Arena is the main leisure centre for the Chester area. Built in the 1970s on the site of the old Chester Northgate railway station, Northgate Arena includes swimming pools, a gymnasium, several sports halls and a sauna. The main sports hall is also used for toy and train, antique, postcard and computer fairs. The smaller halls are used by a range of martial art groups which practise, amongst other disciplines, ju-jitsu, Thai boxing, Ninjutsuand kung fu. The building is also the home ground of the Chester Jets basketball team.
The building is run by CADSART, the Chester And District Sports And Recreation Trust. The Trust was the first of its kind to be established in the North and has grown from strength to strength, inspiring many other local authorities to benefit from employing trusts to manage their leisure amenities.
