[edit] Blurb

A Turkish/Greek restaurant that has been the topic of fierce debate since opening in summer 2007.

[edit] Where

On the corner of Eastgate Row and Northgate Row, in the premises previously occupied by Raffles and several other restaurants.

[edit] Atmosphere

Downstairs is full of squishy sofas in the bar area, and a few tables. The main dining area is upstairs. Staff are laid back and friendly though service is not always up to scratch.

[edit] Prices

Moderate.

[edit] Food

The starter menu offers a good selection of Turkish and Greek meze style dishes but, oddly, not a proper meze option itself (where you order a preselected set menu of dishes at a fixed price). There are also tapas on offer. The main menu includes a few Turkish options but also standards such as steak and lasagne. The dessert menu is resolutely Western - lots of chocolate and cheesecake but no baklava.

The dishes are authentic and well-prepared, as well as reasonable in price.

[edit] Conclusion

Although Chester's dining community are in agreement that the food is excellent, there have been many reports of dreadful service and other issues. Chester @ Large has an official review, but the diners who use the Chester @ Large forum have been very vocal about the problems they consider Meze needs to address. It got one star out of five for food hygiene (Poor = Standards generally low) from scores on the doors
