[edit] Welcome to Chester Wiki
First of all Welcome to the community wiki for Chester, Cheshire in the UK!
[edit] What We Are about
This project is an interconnected and often chaotic community effort to explore, discuss and compile anything and everything about Chester — especially the little, enjoyable things. This entire site is maintained by the people who use it: anyone can edit this website!
Yes, that's right - anyone can edit the wiki. Anyone can contribute, change, and add. Most websites you go to are static — you only read them - this is a very different place - our pages get defaced by graffiti and adverts for "Viagra" or whatever, but people just revert the pages and life goes on (although we do try to ban any users who post such "spam").
This site isn't about making money for anyone. What we are aiming for is a place to record Chester's culture, places, spots — everything! This is an experiment in community and a project that can be fruitful for years to come to both old and new in Chester.
Everyone these days has their own personal blog. They write down everyday activities, things they do, places they go. But how about the city itself? Imagine this as sort of a "blog" for Chester itself. A place for sharing, listening, learning, growing and exploring.
[edit] What You Can Do
Grab your camera and find something to photograph! Write a review of your favorite place - or add a nice walk. Tell us about a nice thing to do on Tuesdays. Give us a picture of your street, local pub, favorite restaurant etc... The topics and room for exploration is endless, and we will hopefully record a little bit of what Chester means for us, here.
What the wiki contains and means is up to you. As a general rule you should contribute content you think will be helpful or insightful to others, but even this rule can be broken at times. Interesting things will stay, and bad contributions will pass with time. Never be afraid to try something new, to edit something, to make your voice heard.
This is our place, our resource, our voice. If you're ready to get started, check out the Chester Wiki Guide.
[edit] If You Just Like To Watch
There are some other excellent web-resources about Chester - if you are just looking for information have a look on the Chester online page. Or try some of these links:
- Chester, a Virtual Stroll - an absolutely brilliant site about Chester and a sterling almost single-handed effort. Well deserving of funding (cos this is the sort of thing that attracts tourists, business etc)
- City Council Site - better than most local authorities
- Phil Jones' detailed history - well illustrated and a pleasure to read (if this was a book you'd buy it - actually you can here)
- British History Online - more good stuff
- Chester@Large - the Forum has a "sticky" list of restaurant websites as well as reviews of many pubs and eateries.
- Veewow.com - Veewow.com is a fantastic video playlist site, with the development team based here in Chester. There is a great Chester playlist there called Chester: A Visitors Guide.
