Austin's Butchers in Northgate Street aside, Hopton's is probably the finest butcher in Chester. You only have to see the length of the queue on Saturday mornings as proof of this. Forget all the battery-produced meat in the supermarkets, Hopton's is the place to go for quality Welsh lamb and proper bacon that doesn't shrink in the pan and ooze all that nasty white gunk (the Cheshire Oak dry-cure is the business). It's the only place for miles where you can buy the simply amazing Label Anglais UK-reared organic chickens (as used by Gordon Ramsay in his restaurants). The staff are wonderfully friendly and will order you anything special if you give them notice. And they stock proper haggis, too.
