[edit] Info

Hoole Fish Bar is not your typical chippy. Influenced by Cypriot cuisine (courtesy of the owner), it offers a wide ranging mix of standard chip-shop fare, plus (thanks to the chef) a very extensive Chinese menu and unforgettable kebabs.

Although the main chippy menu offers a choice of cod or haddock, forget asking for the latter - they never have it (a real shame that in these days of low cod stocks, they don't offer a wider choice of fish). That said, the cod is surprisingly good here, as long as it's not been left for too long in the hot cabinet, with crispy batter. The chips are of a superior quality for a neighbourhood chippy. There is a wide selection of pies, burgers of all kinds and southern-fried chicken (none of which I've tried as I like to be able to identify what I'm eating).

The kebabs are brilliant - they do both the standard doner (Otlu) and the chicken version. The sauces are also rather good. Try the yoghurt and mint for an authentic touch. Many a person has returned from a holiday abroad and gone to the HFB for a kebab because they wanted something real to eat...

While the Shanghai just up the road is the place to go for eat-in Chinese, the takeaway menu at the HFB is an alternative to bankruptcy (vs other local Chinese options), especially if you opt for the chef's specials. The chef (Robert) at HFB is Chinese, has been there for years and knows his stuff. The fried rice is spot on (if a touch greasy) and the staff are happy to adapt any of the dishes for you. HFB also does a good selection of set menus, but trust us when we say you only need to order for four when there are six of you, as portions are very generous!

[edit] Staff and service

The busy staff are not always that chatty but they are friendly enough and service is generally good. They will take telephone orders.

[edit] Local rivalry

The other Chinese chippy in Hoole is the Sea Breeze - Hoolites are divided as to which is the better of the two. Having tried both, my view is that Hoole Fish Bar is far superior (the food being a lot less greasy for one thing).
