[edit] Blurb
This place always reminds me of the Bangalore Club, which, unsurprisingly, is in Bangalore (India). However, the view from the verandah of this cool sprawling bungalow is better, the staff are dressed more neatly and it is probably the best place in Chester to sit outdoors and watch the world float by on the River Dee. Equally surprisingly, The Groves is run by the same restaurateur as Pastarazzi.
[edit] Where
At present, the location is a woody patch at the base of the valley below the amphitheatre. Across the road are the landing stages for boat trips. Plans drawn up in 2007 to redevelop the site and replace it with a building resembling a glass box were not only vetoed by local residents and businesses but also by the council, which declared it was out of keeping with this designated conservation area.
[edit] Atmosphere
It is a pub? Is it a restaurant? Who cares! It's a quiet place to eat a solid fried breakfast, a cool respite from the summer sun for lunch and in the evening it can be busy or far from the madding crowd.
[edit] Prices
There is a link to the menu on the right. To me, this is 'restaurant' food at 'pub' prices.
[edit] Food
I've only ever tried the fried breakfast (£5-£6) - which was far better than the 'greasy spoon', comparable with the Fat Cat, but not in my top three breakfasts in the world (only one of which is in Chester).
[edit] Conclusion
A classy place to eat breakfast on a weekend morning walk by the river - and (from the verandah) a stunning view.
(and if anyone is interested here are my top three breakfasts in the world)
