Flookersbrook

[edit] Blurb
The Flookersbrook replaced the former Ermine public house on Hoole Road. This is no bad thing, given that the Ermine was locally known as the Vermin due to the clientele that drank there. The Flook, as it's usually referred to, has yet to make its mark and has struggled to find its niche in the market.
[edit] Where
Just beyond Hoole Bridge going out of Chester on the A56 Hoole Road. There's plenty of space outside the front entrance for a few tables and benches, and you can sit there on a warm day if you don't mind being asphyxiated by passing traffic on Hoole Road, cars going in and out of the Honda dealership next door, or the articulated lorries delivering supplies to the Spar convenience store round the corner on Ermine Road.
[edit] Atmosphere
Following its grand entrance as an upmarket pub cum wine bar, the Flookersbrook has struggled to find its way over the last couple of years. It's a sizeable venue, but suffers from over-loud background muzak which can make conversation difficult. It can get crowded in the evenings, especially on open mic night when local bands turn up to play. When The Beehive across the road has its own bands on, noise levels can get very loud indeed for local residents. The decor is plain - cream walls with photographs and paintings, and an eclectic mix of wooden tables and chairs. It's comfy enough if you can tolerate the muzak.
[edit] Prices
Average to high.
[edit] Food
The Flook started off with a great homemade lunch and evening menu. Because of its problems, lunch has sometimes vanished off the menu completely but occasionally reappears as an extensive sandwich menu, which is somewhat overpriced. Evening meals, now a standard gastropub-type fare (cod and chips, steak and chips etc), are of reasonable quality and price. If you plan to eat there ring and check if food is on.
[edit] Conclusion
Initially intended to be an upmarket venue, in contrast to its former incarnation as the Ermine, The Flookersbrook has suffered from not being able to attract the type of punters it wanted and has accordingly shifted downmarket, although nowhere near as low as the Ermine. Opening times change with annoying regularity, as does the availability of food.
