[edit] Eating in Chester
For such a small city, Chester has a massive dining out scene. There are currently more than 70 restaurants, and this figure does not include cafés or fast-food chains. The size of the restaurant sector means it is also very competitive and places can shut surprisingly quickly, only to be replaced by something else. As in any town, restaurants can be good, bad or indifferent, with price not necessarily being an indicator of quality. The last few years in particular have seen a high turnover in dining establishments - this can only be a good thing. The recent glut of Italian places (many of which were very average) is slowly giving way to other cuisines, such as the welcome shift to French and other Mediterranean styles as well as modern European/fusion options.
Whether your preference is for Indian, French, Italian, Turkish, Chinese, Thai or even English, you should find somewhere in Chester to suit your taste buds. The list below is by no means complete, so if your favourite restaurant is not listed, please feel free to add a page. Chester really does have a range of cuisines to suit everyone's tastes, and a good range of prices too to suit all budgets.
Comprehensive restaurant reviews and a forum for discussion can be found on the Chester Chronicle's entertainment website www.thecheshireguide.co.uk. Another good site for reviews is Chester @ Large along with frank discussions on Chester @ Large's forum. There are also reviews on the website of the Evening Leader although they never seem to say anything bad about anyone! A list of other places where you can find reviews can be found at the bottom of the page.

[edit] Cafes and sandwich bars
Ian over at Chester@Large has a quest on at present to find a good lunch in town (with a glass of wine) for less than a tenner. He's hunting round the cafes so if you know of a good one add it here and give him a hand!
