[edit] Info
Independent wine merchants, Quellyn Roberts, had a shop on this site since 1863, in one of the old Norman cellars of Watergate Street. It has been long renowned for the amazing selection of wines, spirits and other alcoholic drinks.
The following brief history is condensed from the Quellyn Roberts website and is reproduced here in case the website is removed soon:
"In 1863, Alderman Quellyn Roberts JP, bought a small wine merchant business in Watergate Street. He was 53 at the time, having been born in 1810, and he bought it with the idea of handing it on to one of his sons. This was Joseph, who was not the eldest but may well have been his father's favourite. The family name of Quellyn derives Lynn Quellyn in Snowdonia, but the spelling of both name and lake is obviously anglicized because Welsh has no letter Q and the original spelling would have - as it is today on some maps - Cwellyn. Before Alderman Quellyn Roberts acquired it, it was an antique shop with the name The Antiquarian."
In 2006, QR was taken over by Corks Out, owned by Ruth Yates. The Corks Out website can be found here.
