[edit] Blurb

A small corner of France is alive and well in Chester and it's called Chez Jules. This popular restaurant serves top quality French food and remains consistently good. There are two floors of tables - the upstairs seats 70 and can be hired for functions. Watch out for the special gourmet evenings, where you can sample a five-course tasting menu for under £22 - but book well in advance as these are very popular. Details on the website.

[edit] Where

Northgate Street, so wonderfully central. Although once you are seated you might be forgiven for thinking you are in Paris...

[edit] Atmosphere

Styled like a typical French brasserie, Chez Jules is all wooden chairs and cheery checked tablecloths. There's a real buzz - even on a Monday night, it was busy (although not full), with the hum of conversations vying with the background music.

The staff are professional and friendly. Food arrives promptly.

[edit] Prices

Very reasonable indeed. On our most recent visit, two courses each, plus wine, a coffee, a dessert and an aperitif still didn't hit the £60 mark.

[edit] Food

Fabulous, cheri...

The menu changes every day (a sample menu is on the website) so whatever's on offer will be seasonal and according to what's available. There's usually a choice of around six starters and seven or eight main dishes. All the dishes are French. There is a fixed dessert menu, that includes a cheese platter.

On our latest visit, we had (him) pigeon breast and black pudding on lentils and (her) steamed mussels in a white wine and cream sauce to start. These were followed by (her) lamb with roast sweet potato and a red wine jus and (him) monkfish cheeks with mussels in a cream sauce (a different sauce from the first course). We agreed these were all superb - cooked to perfection and the mains were served with a selection of wonderfully crunchy vegetables and a deliciously garlicky pommes dauphinoise. We shared a pot au chocolat that was rich with dark chocolate and topped with a praline creme fraiche. We went home sated and satisfied. Top marks.

[edit] Conclusion

Chez Jules is amazingly good value for money, considering how high its cooking standards are. You can never be disappointed here with the constantly changing menu and excellent service. Chez Jules is definitely one of Chester's dining jewels.
