[edit] Info

The Chester Chronicle is Chester's weekly paper and is published every Friday. There are two editions - City, which covers Chester itself, and County, which focuses more on news from elsewhere around Cheshire. It has five sections - the main paper, which contains news, sport and business news; The Guide, which contains theatre and concert previews for Chester and beyond, restaurant reviews, TV and film guides, reader competitions and display ads for forthcoming attractions and events; Classified for jobs, buy/sell etc; Property (self-explanatory); and Motoring (ditto).

A "mid-week", cut-down free edition, mostly full of ads, is delivered to homes in Chester every Wednesday (or even Thursday, which makes you wonder why they bother).

The main Friday edition is also useful for finding out about planning applications and community listings such as local councillor surgeries.

[edit] Review

The Chron, as many affectionately call it (and known as the Chronic by the more critical) sits fairly centrally politically. It has won a number of awards over the years for Best Regional Newspaper, fairly well deserved as the paper provides fairly comprehensive weekly coverage of what's going on in Chester and surrounds. However, in recent years criticism has been raised that the Chronicle has lost its neutral edge and seems unwilling to criticise Chester City Council and County Council even when local residents are clearly opposed to many controversial proposals by the local authorities and are filling the letters pages with angry ripostes. Unfortunately, as none of the other local papers are willing to take up the baton and fight on behalf of Cestrians, the Chronicle remains unchallenged and Chester continues to lack a newspaper with real fighting spirit.
